A Postscript on JSC Radio Ep. 80

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — When I first started doing JSC Radio nearly 2½ years ago, I often pictured the podcast — which was, essentially, an extension of this blog — to be a sounding board for not just me, but for interesting and compelling people. In the 90+ shows I’ve done, counting the “Best of” shows and special episodes, I have had a number of great conversations. Ranging from the early episodes where I interviewed Jenee Darden, Lara Witt, and Adrienne Lawrence to the two appearances by Jazmine Duke (including Ep. 61.5, where she and her dad made a tandem appearance) to my interview with the dynamic Renee Washington. This show has been a slow burn and a slow build but every episode is worth it.

That brings me to Episode 80. The 80th Episode of JSC Radio morphed from being a milestone episode (every 5 shows is a damn milestone) to being my favorite overall episode of this show since I started doing it in 2016. I’m a competitive dude. I’m constantly trying to improve upon things and get better, and I felt a lot of that played a role in how well this turned out. But that podcast was nothing without those two dynamic women.

Where the hell have I been in 2018?

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — What’s Good Y’all. I hope I remember how to do this. 

To say that 2018 has been a god-damned adventure is putting it mildly. It’s been one of the weirdest years of my nearly 39 years of life. I can say — without question — I have had more “WTF” moments (both good and bad) than one man should have as an adult. It’s been nuts. I’ve also noticed that it’s been three months since I posted anything on this page. I even fell behind on posting updates on JSC Radio! That’s how wild, stressful, and weird that 2018 has been. Some of this, you guys know about, and I won’t rehash it here. A lot of it you don’t so I’ll explain here.

If you haven’t noticed, this post is going to be very unfiltered and uncensored. At this point, if you’re jarred by a few dirty words, you can leave now. I sincerely no longer care at this point. Either you like me or you don’t but you’re reading one way or the other.

JSC Words of Wisdom #14: Find Your Stance…

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — What’s Good Y’all. That’s right. #JSCWOW is back on its bullshit again and with this being the start of the baseball season, I decided to hit you guys off with a little motivational message with a baseball theme. This kinda hit me out of the blue when thinking about my current situation as well as that of a lot of people who are trying to find their way and their niche in their careers and even their lives.

I’ve always said that “Sports is a Metaphor for Life” and one of the best sports for that is baseball. When you think about how to go about making things happen for yourself, you don’t always have to do it the way everyone does it. You can take your own approach as long as it works for you. No better place to get an understanding of this than to simply take a look in the batter’s box in a given inning of any given game. Every guy that comes to the plate has a different batting stance — one that makes them feel comfortable. This post is about helping you to find your stance and get your comfort level.

JSC Radio Ep. 70: Third Eye Blind

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — The 70th Episode of the People’s Podcast is here and, it’s our Anniversary! Yep. It’s been Two Years since this podcast made its inauspicious debut and ever since that day, it’s grown by leaps and bounds…all while never really having a true single focus. It’s not a sports podcast. It’s not an entertainment podcast. It’s not a political podcast. It’s simply a damn podcast and it’s been a blast for the first two years.

This is NOT appropriation. I grew up with cats who looked like this.

That brings us to Episode 70. Seventy! SETENTA! It is the official end of the “Second Season” of the show and I figure I would take it home by going at all the overly woke soldiers out there who have taken to yelling “cultural appropriation” in the same way that you’re not supposed to yell “fire” in a crowded room. The latest victim is Bruno Mars.

This week, along with me showing love and giving thanks to all of you who have supported this damn show, I also go in on the ridiculous idea that a half Filipino/half Puerto Rican dude who grew up in 1990s Los Angeles is somehow both “stealing from black culture” and succeeding at the expense of Black artists — this asinine and simple-minded idea that “they don’t like black music when it comes from black people” as if this is still the 1960s and most of the top stars in music over the last 40 years haven’t been black. There is such a thing as being too damn woke for your own good.

Plus, I take a second to remember Craig Mack, who passed away this week at just 46. He’s the latest in a growing group of rap icons who died nonviolently before age 50. He set the table for Hip-Hop’s explosive Renaissance in the mid-90s.

JSC Radio Ep. 65: Flipping The Birds

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — This was a hell of a week to be in Philadelphia.

What up doe, People! This has been a hell of a cool week here in Philly to be honest. This week’s episode — another landmark at No. 65 — hits on the aftermath of the orgasm of happiness that was the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl.

As I’ve said multiple times the last few weeks, Philadelphia is a different kind of place when it comes to their sports teams — particularly the Eagles. The Eagles are to Philly what the Red Sox are in Boston, the Cubs are in Chicago, the Saints are in New Orleans, and…yes…the Lions are in Detroit.

This No. 9 found a way to take command and win big games for the Eagles.

The Eagles last won an NFL Championship in 1960, predating the Super Bowl by seven calendar years. They wouldn’t reach their first Super Bowl until after the 1980 season, where they got laid out by the Raiders. It would be almost 25 years before they got back to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Patriots in Jacksonville. The Lombardi Trophy, much like it is in Detroit, was an obsession in Philly. It was the holy grail. It was the Precious. Well, last Sunday, the Eagles obtained the Precious. And they did it in a way that few would’ve ever figured, especially after Carson Wentz’s knee went kaboom on Dec. 10 in Los Angeles, with lightly regarded journeyman Nick Foles out there throwing flames like he grabbed a Fire Flower and a pissed off defense. This week’s show talks about the Eagles influence on the city, the wild celebrations/riots that soon followed, the epic parade featuring one of the greatest promos every by Jason Kelce, and why these Eagles have all the things the Lions wish they had.

Plus, the NBA trade deadline basically turned into the Great Cleveland Massacre.
